Squad Ghouls 1: Scuba Diver

Updated: Oct 10, 2019

Here at Laffy Taffy we know that the family that crafts together, laff's together. Which is why we're bringing you a limited series of some of the best DIY family Halloween costumes. Every Wednesday in October we will be featuring fun, simple, and inexpensive Halloween costumes that every member of the family can take part in making and will mostly consist of stuff you likely have around your house.

Without further ado we present Squad Ghouls: a DIY Family Halloween Costume Blog.

In this first installment we're channeling our inner Jacques Cousteau with this simple and clever scuba diver costume. The setup is pretty simple. All you'll need are:

  • black pants and shirt

  • (2) one or two liter plastic soda bottles (depending on the size of the family member wearing it)

  • paint, glitter, or other fun decorations

  • electrical tape and duct tape

  • a snorkel and goggles

  • rope or yarn

Laffy Taffy Scuba Diver Costume - Step 1
STEP 1: Remove the labels from the soda bottles and make sure they are thoroughly clean and dry. Decorate the bottles in any fun creative way you like (get the kiddos involved here with supervision, of course). Let them dry.

STEP 2: Once dry, wrap black electrical tape and gray duct tape around the top and bottom of the section where the label once was to give them a more authentic scuba gear look.

STEP 3: Carefully hot glue the two bottles together making a pack. (Note: it is best if the kids become spectators during this step, leave the hot gluing to the adults).

STEP 4: Cut two equal lengths of rope (about the size of your arm for kids, a little longer for adults) and hot glue one end of each to the bottom of the bottles. Measure the size of the straps on whomever is wearing the costume so the pack sits snug, cut the excess rope and glue the ends under the bottle caps to make straps.

STEP 5: Don the black clothes, the air tank pack, and the goggles and snorkel and voila, a scuba set up any underwater explorer would be envious of.

That's our cheap and easy DIY scuba diver costume. It can be made to fit any member of the family, but leave the flippers at home, they can be hard to trick or treat in.

Check back here every Wednesday during October for more fun DIY Halloween Costumes! Happy Crafting!
